Timothy J. Coleman, AIA, NCARB, is the founder and owner of Coleman Architecture.  He started the firm with the desire to help all clients -- home owners, business owners, or community groups -- realize their needs in an artistic, functional, and thoughtful way.  In his view, successful architecture is the combination of a deep understanding of client needs along with beautiful design. With 14 years of comprehensive experience in a wide variety of projects, he has proven these principles again and again.  In addition, Mr. Coleman has a thorough understanding of municipal zoning laws and their approval processes that allows him to achieve great architecture in the most efficient manner possible.  Over the years he has succeeded in providing many clients in numerous municipalities with thoughtful designs that provide for their needs while minimizing zoning relief requests that ultimately get approved.

Mr. Coleman received his Associate Degree in Architectural Engineering Technology at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston before transferring to the New Jersey Institute of Technology where he received his Bachelors in Architecture degree.  He has been a member of the American Institute of Architects since graduation and a member of the National Council Of Architectural Registration Boards having completed their IDP program and lengthy registration exam.

Mr. Coleman’s professional career began with DeAndrea Associates in South Plainfield, New Jersey, a multi-disciplined firm.  In his seven years at the firm he managed diverse projects that ran the gamut such as single family residences, multi-family dwellings, daycare centers, restaurants, office buildings, office fit-outs, police stations, fire stations, warehouses and warehouse distribution facilities.  He also designed the singular memorial for the South Plainfield Firemen’s Memorial Park.

Mr. Coleman then moved to Kennedy-Grant Architecture in Bernardsville, New Jersey where his work concentrated on high-end custom single-family residences and light commercial projects.  There he deepened his appreciation in Classical and Traditional architecture, and he incorporated that understanding into all aspects of his designs.  During this period in his career he honed his aesthetic sense and deepened his admiration of the proportioning systems used in Classical and Traditional Architecture to relate the built environment to the human body.

Later Mr. Coleman continued this study at Jay Michael Petrillo Architects in Bedminster, New Jersey.  There he focused solely on custom-built high-end homes, additions and alterations.  He learned hands on how a small firm works and the satisfaction of taking a project from idea, through sketches, drawings, and construction to the final completed building. This practice would be the final stage in his development before opening his own firm.

Combining the experiences of the prior firms he had worked for Mr. Coleman decided it was time to start his own practice.  In 2007 he opened Coleman Architecture with the philosophy that great architecture can be affordable, pleasing in its aesthetics, modern in its conveniences, traditional in its physical harmony and change people’s lives for the better.  Today Coleman Architecture continues to hold to these tenets.
